Hierarchical Structuring and Stimulus Provided by Magnetic Systems to Obtain Advanced Tendon Substitutes and Models
School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS) - Unit for Multidisciplinary Research in Biomedicine (UMIB), University of Porto, Portugal
Manuela E. Gomes is since May 2024 a Full Professor of BioEngineering at the Institute for Medical and Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS) of the University of Porto and Leader of the Research Group on Regenerative Medicine and 3D Tissue Modelling at the Unit for Multidisciplinary Research in Biomedicine (UMIB -ICBAS). Previously she was Associate Professor and Vice-President of the I3Bs Research Institute of the University of Minho, Portugal.
She was a founder member of the 3B’s Research Group and she was the first President of the I3Bs Research Institute, funded in 2018. Her research interests currently focus on tendon tissue engineering strategies, namely in the development of scaffold materials and bio-inks based on biodegradable natural origin polymers, stem cell sourcing and differentiation (using biochemical and physical methods, particularly magnetic stimulus).
Manuela Gomes has been involved in numerous European and national/regional projects as a PI or team member; She currently coordinates a Consolidator Grant (CoG) - MagTendon and a Proof of Concept (PoC) -BioCHIPS from the European Research Council (ERC), and a COST Action - TENET. Manuela Gomes is the editor of 3 books and co-editor of the Tissue Engineering Encyclopaedia (Elsevier, 2019) and author of 260 full papers, 51 book chapters, and 8 patents and has delivered 60 lectures in international conferences. She is an Ambassador in Portugal to the European Orthopaedic Research Society (EORS). Manuela Gomes is a Fellow of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (FTERM, class 2021) and since June 2024 she has been Chair of the European Chapter of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS-EU);
