Development of multifunctional Aluminium-based surfaces through Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation: from laboratory to industrial-scale sustainable applications

Dr Sofia Alves

Fundación Tekniker

Dr. Sofia Alves is a distinguished researcher and innovator in the field of materials science and engineering. She earned her Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Minho (Portugal) and completed her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at the same institution in 2017. During her doctoral studies, Dr Alves focused on the synthesis of multifunctional surfaces for dental implant applications, collaborating closely with the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and the National Institute of Metrology, Quality, and Technology (INMETRO) in Brazil. She also served as a visiting researcher at both institutions.

With a fervent dedication to advancing materials research, Dr. Alves has devoted her career to exploring the development, characterization, and application of advanced materials across various industries. Her research interests encompass a broad spectrum of topics, including nanomaterials, biomaterials, and functional coatings, with applications in biomedical, automotive, aerospace, and other sectors.

Since 2017, Dr Alves has been employed as an R&D Researcher at Tekniker, and she’s focused on the development, functionalization, and characterization of materials for diverse applications. She spearheads the Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) coatings research line and has gained extensive experience in surface engineering, bio-functionalization, surface characterization, materials corrosion, tribocorrosion of contacting surfaces, and in vitro biological and microbiological testing. She has authored numerous scientific papers published in high-impact factor journals and contributed to book chapters, while also presenting her research at international conferences. Additionally, Dr. Alves is a co-inventor on three patent applications.

Dr Alves is also committed to mentoring the next generation of scientists and engineers, guiding them in their research endeavours and professional development. Beyond academia, she actively engages in collaborative research initiatives with industry partners and government agencies, aiming to translate fundamental discoveries into practical solutions that address societal challenges.

Excited to share her latest research findings and insights, Dr. Alves looks forward to presenting at the upcoming ISFGM24 conference, with the goal of fostering collaboration and driving advancements in the field of materials science and engineering.
